What is Rifle Cartridge Efficiency?

The world of rifle cartridges is vast and we as hunters and shooters are presented with what seems like endless options to choose from. Depending on your shooting discipline, there are multiple factors that one can take into consideration when choosing the right cartridge for their application. For a hunter, the chosen cartridge may be something that has the required authority or stopping power for the intended game being pursued or possibly the amount of desired recoil or distance they are engaging game can affect their choice. For target shooters, a big determining factor is the barrel life that a particular cartridge will present based on the premise of shooting high volumes of rounds in short periods of time or again, recoil management, to help spot impacts within their optic and making necessary adjustments. One term that tends to get hidden in all of this, that should be considered, is cartridge efficiency. So what is rifle cartridge efficiency and why does it matter? In this article, we are going to explore this term so it can be taken into consideration when choosing your next cartridge for either at the range or in the field.

What is Cartridge Efficiency?

Simply put, an efficient rifle cartridge is able to convert as much of its powder charge as possible into useable energy and velocity without wasting it in forms of excess recoil, muzzle blast, and barrel wear. Is the cartridge utilizing all of the powder in the case and providing the best yield of energy? There is no black and white to this, similar to fuel efficiency of a vehicle, but can be looked at as some cartridges achieve better efficiency than others.

With that being said, there are a few key factors that can help determine the amount of efficiency that a given cartridge presents.

Powder Burn Rate & Case Design
The overall design of a cartridge case and the capacity of powder it holds due to its shape and the size of projectile that it houses can be a good indicator as to whether all of the powder will be utilized efficiently. A cartridge that is able to burn all of its powder while providing optimal velocity for the size of projectile, without producing diminishing returns, will provide evidence that it is a well balanced cartridge. Cartridges that have overly large cases and house too much powder can lead to unburnt powder exiting the muzzle, resulting in sub-par efficiency and increased muzzle blast.
Case to Bore Relationship
Like the term suggests, this refers to the size of the case, how much powder it holds, and what the size of the rifle bore is. There are many cartridge designs out there that possess a huge powder capacity with a small bullet diameter. Yes, this achieves blazing fast speeds but with the tradeoff is unburnt powder, excessive barrel wear, increased muzzle blast, and more.
Barrel Length
The length of the rifle barrel plays a big part in how efficiently a cartridge burns its powder. A longer barrel provides more velocity but also more space for the powder to fully burn. Short barrel rifles, although compact and convenient for hunting applications, can present limitations of the powder burn rate leading to unburnt powder and a higher degree of potential energy loss. It is often recommended that larger magnum cartridges require longer barrels for this reason.

Properties of Inefficient Cartridges

How do we know when a cartridge is inefficient? There are some simple signs that one can observe when shooting an inefficient cartridge when compared to one that possesses higher efficiency. Wasted energy in the form of sharp, unpleasant recoil that does not present any corresponding performance benefits. Inefficient cartridges often present visible muzzle blast that is a result of an incomplete powder burn. And finally, when observing the bore of a rifle chambered in an inefficient cartridge it is not uncommon to see signs of unburnt powder grains, showing that not all of the powder was utilized from the case.

Cartridge Efficiency for Hunters and Shooters

The efficiency of a cartridge should be taken into consideration for both hunters and shooters. This can be subjective and may not be as imperative to some but for the sake of this article here are some points that both parties can consider.

Selecting an efficient cartridge for a hunting application is important as it can ensure consistent performance without excessive recoil. This can lead to more precise shot placement from different shot angles while the adrenaline is pumping. Fan favorite hunting calibers like the 270 Winchester and the 30-06 Springfield balance both power and efficiency, making them a go-to option for the better part of a century.

With the increase in popularity in precision shooting disciplines, cartridge efficiency is a primary focus for these members. A consistent powder burn will provide repeatable accuracy and reduced recoil, so each shot can be easier to trace. An efficient cartridge will also provide the shooter with longer barrel life since their discipline requires high volumes of shots in short periods of time.

Understanding cartridge efficiency empowers you to make informed choices, whether for hunting or precision match shooting, that can enhance performance, reduce recoil, extend barrel life, and elevate your overall shooting experience. While often overlooked, cartridge efficiency is a key factor in rifle shooting that, when understood, can significantly improve your knowledge and capabilities.
